چکیده

The chemical nature of the different interfaces and possible segregation effects are studied in fully epitaxial Fe/MgO/Fe s001d oriented heterostructures fabricated by combined sputtering plus laser ablation deposition techniques. Auger electron spectroscopy depth profiling experiments showed that the interfaces of the MgO spacer with the Fe layers are different, the inner MgO/Fe being spatially broader and with an FeO interlayer, while that of the outer Fe/MgO is spatially narrower with no evidence of FeO formation. This spatial and chemical asymmetry is interpreted in terms of the different deposition procedures, which affect the formation of both interfaces. No Fe segregation in the MgO layers or MgO segregation in the Fe films is observed. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. fDOI: 10.1063/1.1847718g

Geometrical and compositional structure at metal-oxide interfaces: MgO on Fe(001).

The geometric structure of MgO deposited on Fe(001) in ultrahigh vacuum by electron evaporation was determined in detail by using surface x-ray diffraction. In contrast to the common belief that MgO grows in direct contact on the Fe(001) substrate, we find an FeO interface layer between the substrate and the growing MgO structure which has not been considered thus far. This result opens new per...

Theory of tunneling magnetoresistance in a disordered Fe/MgO/Fe(001) junction

Calculation of the tunneling magnetoresistance TMR of an Fe/MgO/Fe 001 junction with a disordered Fe/MgO interface is reported. It is shown that intermixing of Fe and Mg atoms at the interface decreases the TMR ratio rapidly and when about 16% of interfacial Fe atoms are substituted by Mg the calculated TMR saturates with increasing MgO thickness in good agreement with experiment. It is demonst...

Enhanced Interlayer Exchange Coupling in Co/Fe/MgO/Fe(001)

We investigate the bilinear and biquadratic interlayer exchange coupling in Co/Fe/MgO/Fe(001). Samples are grown through molecular beam epitaxy and the interlayer exchange coupling is measured through magneto-optic Kerr effect along wedge samples. By varying the location of Fe impurities between the interface and middle of the MgO spacer, we find that the couplings are enhanced and are dependen...

Spin-polarized electron tunneling in bcc FeCo/MgO/FeCo(001) magnetic tunnel junctions.

In combining spin- and symmetry-resolved photoemission, magnetotransport measurements and ab initio calculations we detangled the electronic states involved in the electronic transport in Fe(1-x)Co(x)(001)/MgO/Fe(1-x)Co(x)(001) magnetic tunnel junctions. Contrary to previous theoretical predictions, we observe a large reduction in TMR (from 530 to 200% at 20 K) for Co content above 25 atomic% a...

Strong enhancement of the tunneling magnetoresistance by electron filtering in an Fe/MgO/Fe/GaAs(001) junction.

Calculations of the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) of an epitaxial Fe/MgO/Fe tunneling junction attached to an n-type GaAs lead, under positive gate voltage, are presented. It is shown that for realistic GaAs carrier densities the TMR of this composite system can be more than 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of a conventional Fe/MgO/Fe junction. Furthermore, the high TMR is achieved wi...
